After settlement in 1835, a number of quarantine areas had been established at various points around the coast of Port Phillip Bay. However, in 1852, Governor LaTrobe selected Point Nepean as the site for a new quarantine area, and the colonial government assigned 5000 for a 'sanatorium'.
